摘要：托马斯·沃顿对于文学史研究意义重大,他以《英诗史》开启了现代意义上的文学史研究。韦勒克对于沃顿《英诗史》的解读强调,正是通过沃顿的写作实践,叙述性文学史研究由可能变为现实,他将前辈与自己的研究所积累的大量文献材料组织进一个有序的框架内,显现了他超凡的能力,而且,沃顿有意识地根据确定的原则选择和评价文献材料,甚至还意识到了在一个价值框架内作为准则的"表现"的必要性,这一点同样体现了一种进步。另一方面值得注意的是,现代意义上的文学史勃兴所有赖的"个体化"原则与"发展"观念这两个要素在沃顿这里并未得到充分体现,所以,沃顿《英诗史》在文学史研究的总体进程中,意义更多仍源自形式。
Thomas Warton is of great significance to the study of literary history, for be started the study of literary history in the modern sense with The History of English Poetry. Focusing on Wellek＇ s inter- pretation of The History of English Poetry by Thomas Warton, the paper stresses that it is Warton＇ s writing practice that has turned the study of narrative literary history from a possibility to reality. He organized a great amount of literature from his predecessors and his own researches into an orderly framework, which reveals his extraordinary ability. Moreover, Warton consciously selected and evaluated literature materials according to the established principles and he even realized the necessity of ＂performance＂ as a guideline within a value framework, which also reflects a kind of progress. On the other hand, it is worth noting that the ＂individualization＂ principle and the ＂development＂ concept, the two elements that the literary history relied on to grow？ vigorously are not fully reflected in Warton＇ s work. Therefore, the significance of The History of English Poetry by Thomas Warton to the overall process of the study of literary history comes more from the form.
