Objective:To investigate the effects of 10-week cervical manipulation therapy on collegiate sprinters’ absolute speed, reaction speed, rapid strength and dynamic balance. Methods:30 collegiate sprinters were randomly and equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received the upper cervical spine adjustment with the Diversified technique plus traditional sprint training;the control group did only the sprint training. The cervical manipulation intervention period lasted for 10 weeks(3 times per week). Data of marching 30-meter running, start reaction time, vertical jump and lower limb Y-balance test were collected both before and after the intervention. Results:for the experimental group, the start reaction time, vertical jump height, right lower limb support and left lower limb support improved to varying degrees, and the difference was statistically significant compared with those before the intervention(P<0.05). For the control group, only the posteromedial distance of the left lower limb improved significantly compared with that before the intervention(P<0.05). After the intervention, the start reaction time, distances in all 3 directions and the composition score of the right lower limb and the posteromedial distance of the left lower limb of those in the experimental group significantly improved compared with those in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusions:10-week cervical manipulation therapy can improve the qualities of reaction speed and dynamic balance of collegiate sprinters to a certain extent, but has no obvious effects on improving the absolute speed quality and the rapid strength of the lower limbs. As a proper and effective non-training method, cervical manipulation therapy can be introduced into specific sprint training to improve the quality of specific training for sprinters and their athletic performance.
