The Cold Food Festival had changed much from the Han Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Among its four main transformations, the first change is that the festival was diffused to more space, more people celebrated the festival, and the festival enjoyed more and more importance in social life; the second is the date of the festival fell on the 105th day after the Winter Solstice in the Northern and Southern Dynasties whereas it was in winter during the Han Dynasty; the third is there were more amusements and multifunctional festival customs, which led to the transformation of festival's feature and function; the fourth is there were quite differences between the South and the North on how people spent the Cold Food Festival. The emigration in the period from the Wei Dynasty and Jin Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties played a great role on the diffusion and the transformation of the festival. The Cold Food Festival (originating in the North, and being carried to the South) had experienced great transformation in the South in accordance with the new living conditions there. Later, with the emigration from the South to the North, the cold food festival custom of the South diffused to the North, and blended with the Cold Food Festival custom of the North. The mix of the two customs founded a strong base for the flourishing of the festival in the Tang Dynasty.
