摘要:本文研究了在新西兰的中国留学生在学业上和生活中遇到的挑战:25名参与调查的学生参与了与新西兰怀卡托大学管理学院1+3的交流项目。本文主要采用访谈形式并对其结果进行整理与分析。研究发现:多数学生经历了中国和新西兰不同的教学方法以及学习方式,他们在学业上的压力主要来自父母的高期望值以及完成作业,合作学习等。在生活上的压力主要来自住宿的安排,如何与住宿家庭进行沟通等。总体上来说,中国留学生对于新西兰怀卡托大学提供的课程以及教学质量比较满意。然而,由于存在语言障碍造成无论是在学业上还是生活上都难以与当地人进行良好地沟通。语言困难和文化差异造成沟通障碍,陌生的课堂互动模式,对不同的学业要求及评定标准缺乏了解,遇到困难又缺乏有力的支持等,这些都会在一定程度上降低学生对该大学的满意度。
This article explores challenges that Chinese students encountered both in their academic and non-academic life in New Zealand: a total of 25 Chinese students are chosen for this program to participate in the 1+3 exchange program with the University of Waikato.Ten open-ended interview questions are used for data collection.This study finds that most students suffer from the differences in teaching methods and learning styles.The pressures not only come from high expectations from their parents, assignment and cooperative learning in their academic life, but also from the instability of accommodation and interaction with home-stay family.Overall, they are satisfied with their learning experiences at the University of Waikato in terms of educational quality and program offering.However, most of them are not competent in their communication in English, which has interfered with their academic life and interaction with members of the host country.Characterizing these challenges are language difficulties and cultural differences as intercultural barriers, unfamiliar patterns of classroom interactions, lack of knowledge of academic norms and conventions, andinadequate learning support, all these combining to impact on Chinese students’ perceptions and levels of satisfaction with their learning experiences at the university.
